Even out doors when your flash is 25 feet away from your subject you can fill in shadows which you find darker than you would like. The version of the photo at left was shot with no flash.
The photo at right was shot with a Nikon Speedlite set to underexpose by 2 stops. Note on the vertical portion of the back hoe the shadows are much lighter. The grass in the lower right corner is also brightened.
